Children's House III: Dr. Seuss (Full Day)

$555
Calendar Jul 26, 2021 at 8:30 am, runs for 2 weeks

AgesFor students 2 years, 9 months to 6 years old

Your child will join our skilled and inspired staff for fun in the sun and shade led by a Montessori trained Lead Teacher. Classrooms at the Montessori School of Northampton are thoughtfully prepared environments set up to inspire creative play, independence, and joy. The program’s low teacher to child ratio supports individualized time with students and creates a relaxed, summer pace.  The children are encouraged to make their own play choices from the different areas of the classroom: Reading Loft, Everyday Living, Peace Corner, Blocks, puzzles, games, and other engaging manipulatives. Fantasy play is encouraged! Each two-week session highlights a different theme. Our resident artist plans daily art projects related to the session's theme. At circle times, classroom teachers explore the theme through books, songs, and teacher presentations. The program features fun outdoor play in a park-like setting, wading pools, water play (PM only), and a large children’s playground. We offer indoor fun in one of the best-equipped, most beautiful classroom environments in the Pioneer Valley.

Children bring bag lunch and AM/ PM snacks.

Daily Schedule:

  • 8:30-9:00 Outside arrival and greeting
  • 9:00  First circle

  • 1:15  Free play
  • 2:15  Outside play and water play

This summer we will be taking very specific safety precautions to ensure the health of students and staff: requiring all students and staff to wear masks, socially distance and routinely wash hands, keeping each classroom size lower than usual, daily health screenings, and emphasizing outdoor class as much as possible. Outdoor class time will occur under a large tent or on our expansive playground.

Advanced Graphic Novel & Comic Book Art

$230

with Rob Kimmel

Calendar Jul 26, 2021 at 9 am, runs for 1 week

Ages: Entering grades 5, 6 & 7

Time: 8:30-12:00

If you like comics, you can make comics! Graphic novels and comic book storytelling are great vehicles for young people to discover the writer within themselves. In one week, you’ll learn techniques to create characters and experiment with ways to tell stories through the combination of words and images. Turn a doodle into a character. Add a second doodle and they can have a conversation. Put them in a panel and you have a scene. Draw a second panel and you have started a comic. Instructors introduce the idea of storytelling through images (both as readers and as creators), sequential art, and the concept of character as the defining force in stories.

Schedule:

  • 8:45 Class begins
  • 12:00 Dismissal for morning students.
  • 12:00-1:00 Lunch & Outdoor recess for students registered for ADVANCED GRAPHIC NOVEL & COMIC BOOK ART and POKEMON MASTER ENGINEERING afternoon class.

Rob Kimmel is an illustrator, graphic designer, and educator. He has an MFA in writing for children from Simmons University, and taught at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. He is rarely seen without a pencil in hand! Born and raised in Chicago, Rob worked in the theater for several years and has traveled extensively from North Africa to South Asia. These varied experiences flavor his approach to art and writing. He has taught at the MSN Summer Program for the last six years.

This summer we will be taking very specific safety precautions to ensure the health of students and staff: requiring all students and staff to wear masks, socially distance and routinely wash hands, keeping each classroom size lower than usual, daily health screenings, and emphasizing outdoor class as much as possible.
